One way to learn multiplication tables is to practice them over and over again. Repetition and consistency are key. Although there's more to learning multiplication than memorizing times tables, flash cards are a great visual to use when practicing multiplication drills.

There are two separate PDF printables for the flash cards above. The first one includes the multiplication tables and the second one shows the answers. Print the flash cards double-sided so the multiplication problem is on the front of the card and the answer is on the back. To do this, print one entire PDF or specific pages of the PDF, and then flip the papers over and print the second PDF or its corresponding answer pages.
Printing the flash cards on thick card stock will make them easier to cut and use. Also, you may want to print each set of times tables on a different color card stock. For example, print the one times table on red, the two times tables on green and so on. Punch a hole in one corner of the cards and hold them together with yarn or a key ring to keep the cards together and organized.
Tips for Use
Multiplication flash cards are perfect for kids who want to brush up on their math skills. Most kids learn multiplication after they've mastered addition and subtraction, usually in third grade around age eight. However, your child may start earlier or later.
The traditional way to use multiplication flash cards is to show one at a time and have your child answer the problem. You can do this together, or your child can do it by himself. However, this may get boring quickly. Change things up by trying these fun ways to use flash cards (you may need multiple sets of cards):
- Keep some cards near the front door or another door your child enters and exits often. Require him to answer a problem correctly before he goes in or out.
- Use a timer and only allow ten seconds to give an answer.
- Reward your child with a small prize or a special dinner when she masters a predetermined number of cards.
- Use the flash cards to pass the time at the doctor's office or in line at the grocery store.
- Once your child is comfortable with his multiplication tables, use the flash cards to play a variation of the card game War. You'll need two people to play. Each player lays down a flash card and gives the answer. The player with the highest answer keeps both cards. Whoever has the most cards at the end, wins.
- The Average Housewife suggests playing flash card Twister by writing answers on each colored circle on a Twister mat. You call out the problems and your child must put a body part on the correct answer. All other typical Twister rules apply. The game is more fun with multiple players.
A Great Learning Tool
Many education professionals stress the importance of understanding how multiplication works and not just memorizing multiplication tables. Still, some research suggests that regular practice will increase your child's ability to recall multiplication facts, and consequently, allow her to tackle more difficult math problems. Flash cards are just one way to practice multiplication tables, but they're a great learning tool. With a little creativity, you can make practicing multiplication something your child looks forward to.
